Interdisciplinary Programs
Asian Studies
The Asia Center serves as a hub for Asia-related activities at the University of Utah involving teaching, research, and outreach to K-12 schools and the broader community. The center supports Asian Studies in its broadest sense, incorporating the languages and countries of the core regions of East, South, Southeast, and Central Asia as well as Russia, the Pacific, and West Asia.
Environmental Humanities Graduate Program
Environmental Humanities is a two-year degree training the next generation of environmental leaders and thinkers. Here at the University of Utah, students enjoy space to reflect on a world of entangled human and other presences. We encourage creative and scholarly exchanges toward new forms of environmental leadership and environmental justice.
International Studies
The International Studies Program uses the wide-ranging resources at the University of Utah to prepare students to live and work in the increasingly global world of the 21st century. The interdisciplinary methods, language study, and direct international experience make it an inviting major alone or in combination with other programs of study available at the University. The degree grounds students in different disciplines (such as communication, economics, history, political science, foreign language) and permits them to explore the international scope of these disciplines.
Latin American Studies
The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) serves as a hub for Latin American-related activities at the University of Utah involving teaching, research and community outreach. On campus, CLAS partners with the Office of Global Engagement, Hinckley Institute of Politics, Department of World Languages & Cultures, and Second Language Teaching and Research Center, in addition to many individual departments and colleges, to facilitate the development of Latin America-related curriculum, public events, conferences, study abroad and internship programs.
Middle East Studies
The Middle East Studies degree is designed to provide students with language and cultural competence in the region of the Middle East that can become the foundation for careers in public affairs, public service, business, and many other fields. Students are strongly encouraged to combine the Middle East Studies Major with a major in another discipline so that upon graduation they have acquired a foundation of career-oriented skills as well as a high degree of global competency.
Mormon Studies
The Tanner Humanities Center launched its Mormon Studies Initiative in 2010 to encourage the vibrant, intellectual exploration of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and all religious traditions that trace their roots to Joseph Smith in an effort to better understand their various institutions, histories, cultures, and peoples. The College of Humanities is now home to the Mormon Studies Initiative which continues to foster research, writing, funding, teaching, and the hosting of conferences and workshops related to the study of various Mormon traditions.
Peace and Conflict Studies
The Peace and Conflict Studies (P&CS) Program is an interdisciplinary program that deals with conflicts ranging from the interpersonal to the global level. The program enables students to understand the dynamics of peace and conflict and to contribute to the creation of more just and peaceable conditions in the home, the work place, and the world. Students choose from an interdisciplinary menu of courses that explore such topics as conflict theory, war and terrorism, just war theory, the history of peace efforts and non-violent social movements, community-based conflict management and resolution, and human rights.
