Faculty Awards Summaries
Distinguished Faculty Service Award honors a College of Humanities tenured faculty member who has demonstrated a sustained commitment to university and/or community service. All faculty members are eligible. Anyone may nominate a faculty member. Nominations must include a letter of nomination describing the outstanding service demonstrated by the nominee, a letter of support from the nominee’s department chair, and a brief CV highlighting the nominee’s university- or community-engaged service or scholarship. Additional letters of support are welcome. Nominations are due the 1st Monday in April.
Distinguished Scholar in the Humanities recognizes significant scholarly accomplishments and research contributions by College of Humanities tenured faculty. All tenured faculty members are eligible. Anyone may nominate a faculty member. Self-nomination is allowed. Nominations must include a one-page letter detailing the nominee’s significant accomplishments, a letter of support, and the nominee’s CV. Nominations are due the 1st Monday in April.
Ramona W. Cannon Award for Teaching Excellence in the Humanities recognizes one College of Humanities faculty member each year. The recipient receives $1,000 as part of the award. The award committee invites departmental nominations. Department chairs, individual faculty, teaching committees, and student advisory committees are encouraged to work with their department to nominate one outstanding Humanities teacher. All tenured or tenure-track faculty in the College of Humanities who have completed three years of teaching at the University of Utah are eligible for nomination. Faculty nominees must be teaching Spring semester. To nominate someone, submit a letter (2 pages max) describing the special teaching and achievements of the nominee to the Ramona Cannon Committee, c/o Natalie Montoya, Dean’s Office, College of Humanities (2100 LNCO) or email to natalie.montoya@utah.edu. Nominations are due in January.
Rising Star in the Humanities recognizes significant scholarly accomplishments and research contributions by College of Humanities junior faculty. All pre-tenured faculty members are eligible. Anyone may nominate a faculty member. Self-nomination is allowed. Nominations are due the 1st Monday in April. Nominations must include a one-page letter detailing the nominee’s significant accomplishments, a letter of support, and the nominee’s CV.
Robert A. Goldberg Endowed Faculty Prize in Humanities recognizes faculty whose record in teaching and research reflects high merit and provides a stipend to support the faculty member’s ongoing projects. This award honors Goldberg’s forty-year career as an inspiring teacher, devoted mentor of countless graduate students, a prominent scholar of American political history and, for thirteen years, director of the Tanner Humanities Center. A call for nominations will be sent out in the Spring. Nominations are usually due the 1st Monday of April.
